Introducing Carly Beisel! Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Carly is an SEO Content Marketer for Oyster; a software company with a mission to solve the complexities of giving full-time employment to anyone anywhere in the world. In her free time, Carly can be found playing golf, enjoying live music, exploring bookstores, and spending time with friends & family.

We asked her everything from how she first got into SEO to what empowers her to be the brilliant woman she is 💪🏽

How did you get into SEO?

Like many, SEO was an area of focus I happily fell into. I initially started my career in content marketing and soon learned the importance SEO plays in making a digital impact. My involvement began as an SEO specialist for a rapidly growing agency in the Twin Cities. I immediately became fascinated by the psychology of search and immersed myself in projects where I was able to learn crucial SEO skills through experimentation.

What is your favourite SEO task?

Optimizing, optimizing, optimizing! I love looking at a webpage and immediately seeing opportunities for growth. Whether it's page restructure, technical work, adding keyword-rich content, or general SEO tweaks, I am excited by any opportunity to take a URL to its ideal state.

What is your go-to tool or resource that you can't live without?

Aside from the support of Women in Tech SEO, I really value AlsoAsked. It's a great tool for learning how users are searching for a specific query and makes keyword research all the more interesting.

What is something you learned in SEO that made you have an 'AHA' moment?

Sometimes the keyword phrases we assume users search are non-existent. Gearing your content to what is actually being searched, and with proper intent is the ultimate key. It's all about keyword data!

What is your proudest industry achievement?

I'm proud of the exposure I have. I've worked on sites of all sizes with varying CMS and client goals. I'm looking forward to the future of my SEO career, to hopefully unlock achievements where I can pass my knowledge on to other women in the industry.

What advice would you give women who are starting out in SEO?

Do not be intimidated. The world of SEO is vast and can at times be overwhelming. Ignore the notion that you have to know everything upfront. Involve yourself in projects that allow you to learn by trial and error, and find mentors who can share their experiences with you to help you grow.

Give a shout out to a woman in the industry who inspires you and tell us why

I'd like to give a massive shout out to my dear friend and mentor, Lauren Myhra. Lauren and I started out as colleagues, where she empowered me to problem solve and believe in my abilities. Since then, Lauren has grown to become a Director of SEO, where I have no doubts she is inspiring her team the same way she inspired me.

Finally, what empowers you to be the brilliant woman you are?

A hunger for learning. I'm surrounded by strong women who remind me that knowledge is power, and with every challenge comes an opportunity to grow into the person you aspire to become.
